Neighbours helping neighbours: Mainland Sand and Gravel Ltd. and Winvan Paving Ltd. return as co-presenting sponsors for RCH Foundation's SHINE Gala

Two neighbouring businesses that have worked along the Fraser River for three decades are teaming up again to support another neighbour – Royal Columbian Hospital (RCH) – returning as co-presenting sponsors of RCH Foundation’s 2010 fundraising Gala, SHINE, on March 4, 2010.

Winvan Paving Ltd., based in New Westminster, and Mainland Sand and Gravel Ltd., based in Surrey, are two family-owned businesses that have worked together since the early 1980s. Winvan Paving Ltd. is a road building contractor that specializes in asphalt manufacturing, and Mainland Sand and Gravel Ltd. is the crushed stone and rock supplier for Winvan’s asphalt manufacturing operation. Both companies conduct business throughout the Greater Vancouver, Fraser Valley and Squamish-Lillooet regional districts.

As co-presenting sponsors of RCH Foundation’s 2009 Gala, Journey through Shangri-La, Winvan Paving Ltd. and Mainland Sand and Gravel Ltd. helped raise more than $1.6 million for critical care at RCH in 2008/09.

Weismiller, whose son was born at RCH, and whose employees have received care at the hospital, is frequently reminded of RCH’s trauma care role by the BC Air Ambulance helicopters that fly overtop of their business site.

“We see those helicopters fly overhead and we just know there is someone in there that is in real desperate straits,” says Weismiller. “Hospitals reach out to those who are in desperate need, and so it’s important that they are the best equipped to handle those difficult situations.”

Ted Carlson, president of Mainland Sand and Gravel, who has personally experienced the need for critical care, agrees that supporting RCH is vital to the health of the Fraser Health region.

“I’ll never forget how truly amazed I was at the level of care my son and daughter received when they needed extensive emergency surgery several years ago,” says Carlson. “We are pleased to be able to support great health care in the community in which we work and live, and we always feel that ‘those that can…should’ – it’s just that simple for us.”
