Every moment of care begins with a person
Every moment of care at Royal Columbian Hospital begins with a person.
Behind every emergency surgery, every stroke intervention, every newborn's first breath, and every life-changing recovery is a dedicated team of nurses, physicians, allied health professionals, technicians, support staff, and learners. Their expertise, compassion, and commitment make extraordinary care possible for patients and families across British Columbia.
As Royal Columbian Hospital enters a new era with the opening of the Jim Pattison Acute Care Tower, investing in the people who deliver care has never been more important. World-class facilities alone do not transform healthcare. It is the people within them who make the difference.
Through philanthropic support, donors help create an environment where caregivers can thrive, grow, and continue delivering exceptional care. From staff wellness initiatives and educational opportunities to childcare, housing support, and recruitment efforts, donor-funded investments strengthen the workforce that patients depend on every day.
When we care for caregivers, we strengthen care for everyone.
Why we need you
Royal Columbian Hospital is a lifeline for patients across British Columbia and a major centre for specialized, high-acuity care in the province. It is the largest employer in New Westminster, with more than 3,300 employees and over 440 physicians who care for patients referred from communities throughout Fraser Health and beyond. Behind every emergency surgery, complex diagnosis, and recovery stands a team of highly trained caregivers—nurses, physicians, technicians, and support staff—meeting relentless demands with dedication and compassion.
But these professionals are under strain. Staff shortages, burnout, housing insecurity, and rising childcare needs add another layer of pressure on our healthcare system. And with one-third of BC’s nurses nearing retirement and demand for specialized care soaring, the challenge is only intensifying.
The opening of the Jim Pattison Acute Care Tower expands Royal Columbian’s capacity across critical programs and create more than 1,000 additional healthcare and support positions. To meet this growth, we must match world-class facilities with a world-class environment for the people who make care possible. A hospital is only as strong as those who work within it—and your support ensures we can attract, empower, and care for them.
Why philanthropy matters
Donors play a unique role in strengthening the healthcare workforce.
Philanthropic funding allows Royal Columbian to invest in opportunities and innovations that improve the experience of working and learning within one of BC's busiest and most complex hospitals. These investments support recruitment and retention, encourage professional development, promote staff wellness, and help create a culture where people feel connected, appreciated, and inspired.
Simply put, donor support helps ensure that the people who care for our community receive the care and support they need in return.
