Dr. Gerald Simkus served as an interventional cardiologist and a prominent leader in interventional cardiology in Fraser Health and British Columbia for 25 years. He was a compassionate clinician who served in medical advisory roles at many levels in the system of cardiac care both locally and provincially. During his tenure, RCH evolved to become one of the busiest interventional cardiology programs in Canada. He championed the development of the primary infarct angioplasty program in Fraser Health Region, which has had a major impact on the survival and long-term outcomes of many patients who have suffered from heart attacks in our region.
Preference will be given to a Royal Columbian Hospital resident(s) who embodies the qualities Dr. Simkus is well loved and respected for:
- Leadership in clinical medicine and among peers
- Clinical excellence
- Excellence in clinical teaching and clinical research aiming to improve patient care and outcomes
- Demonstration of potential to contribute to cardiac care in FHR
