Royal Columbian Hospital to Begin a New Era of Care

Together, We’re Transforming Care for Generations to Come

Major steps toward the future of care at Royal Columbian Hospital are made possible with the support of donors like you.

Your generosity is helping bring to life the Jim Pattison Acute Care Tower: a ten-storey, state-of-the-art facility that will redefine what’s possible in critical care for patients and families across British Columbia.

When the tower opens in early 2026, it will mark one of the most significant transformations in our hospital’s history, expanding capacity, introducing new technologies, and creating environments built for healing.

Thanks to you, Royal Columbian will continue to stand ready for patients in their most urgent, life-altering moments, from heart attacks and strokes to premature births and severe trauma.

But we’re not done yet. Your continued support ensures the best that healthcare can be.

A New Era of Care at Royal Columbian Hospital

Behind the scenes, an extraordinary effort is underway to prepare for the opening of Royal Columbian Hospital’s new centrepiece: the Jim Pattison Acute Care Tower, scheduled to open in early 2026.

Teams are bringing in equipment, testing systems, and carefully planning the relocation of people, programs, and technology into the new building. It’s a massive undertaking that reflects the same precision and dedication that define Royal Columbian’s role as a critical care leader for the province.

Royal Columbian is already B.C.’s most comprehensive critical care centre: the only hospital in the province that combines trauma, cardiac, neurosciences, high-risk maternity, and neonatal intensive care all on one site. The new tower brings these vital programs together under one roof, with expanded space, modern technology, and design that prioritizes patients and families.

Highlights of the Jim Pattison Acute Care Tower

Emergency and Trauma

  • One of B.C.’s busiest Emergency Departments — nearly 88,000 visits each year — will more than double in size.

  • 75 modern treatment rooms, four trauma bays, and a dedicated medical imaging suite will allow caregivers to respond faster when seconds count.

  • Five specialized treatment zones, including pediatrics and mental health & substance use, will improve comfort and privacy for patients and families.

Critical Care

  • Critical care capacity will grow from 40 to 84 beds, including a new Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.

  • Each space is designed for advanced monitoring, family presence, and healing, complete with natural light, quiet areas, and comfort spaces designed to support families and emotional well-being.

Care for Families

  • On Level 5, the Obstetrics Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) will share a single floor, so families can stay close.

  • The NICU’s 24 single-family rooms and the new private birthing suites give families privacy and comfort when they need it most.

Pediatric and Specialized Care

  • Level 6 will include a 16-bed Pediatric Inpatient Unit, Pediatrics Outpatient Clinic, and High Intensity Monitoring Unit for patients needing close observation.

Interventional and Surgical Innovation

  • The interventional “superfloor” on Level 2 will unite operating rooms, cardiac catheterization labs, and interventional radiology suites — one of the first models of its kind in Canada.

  • With 17 operating rooms, including a robotics-enabled OR, specialists will have the most advanced tools for heart, stroke, and trauma care.

Advanced Specialties

  • Upper floors will strengthen programs in neurosciences, vascular surgery, orthopedics, and trauma, reaffirming Royal Columbian’s role as a provincial referral centre for complex cases.

  • A new rooftop helipad will ensure the fastest possible access for air ambulance patients arriving in life-threatening situations.
