Ken Barrett’s Story
As a devoted fan and volunteer at Agassiz Speedway, 79-year old Ken Barrett has seen the occasional car crash over the years. But the worst wreck was away from the track, when a car t-boned his vehicle as Ken was crossing an intersection in Surrey. His traumatic injuries led to three surgeries in less than three weeks at Royal Columbian Hospital, including a fairly new procedure to fix severely broken ribs with titanium plates.
Donors help Royal Columbian purchase world’s smallest heart-lung machine
A medical team from Royal Columbian Hospital that is called upon by the region’s other hospitals to take over the care of critically ill patients is now travelling much lighter thanks to donors to Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation.
Generous support has allowed the hospital’s Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) team – the only mobile retrieval team of its kind in the province – to become the first in British Columbia to acquire the CARDIOHELP system, a portable machine that takes over the function of the heart and lungs when a patient’s health is rapidly deteriorating.
Hank Erickson’s Story
Hank Erickson was already very familiar with Royal Columbian Hospital in the fall of 2014, when he was rushed there by ambulance for what turned out to be a small vessel stroke. For two decades previously, he had walked its corridors daily, visiting staff and patients as the hospital’s chaplain. It was during that time he first encountered a patient who would eventually be considered one of the country’s greatest heroes of the 20th century: Terry Fox.
