Susi Kerr’s story
Being active is a big part of Susi Kerr’s life. The Tsawwassen resident is a personal trainer who has her own studio in Vancouver. She has run competitively through high school, university and on the national team. And she and her family have enjoyed waterskiing for many years.
But a serious accident on Harrison Lake during a summer getaway put all of that in danger. In the minutes before she underwent surgery at Royal Columbian Hospital, Susi feared she would never walk again.
CP donates $90,000 to Royal Columbian Hospital for cardiac care
In conjunction with Canadian Pacific’s sponsorship of the CFL Grey Cup, the railroad’s CP Has Heart Touchdowns program is making a run to the end zone in the name of cardiac care, delivering cash to Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation. The funds will purchase equipment to improve critical cardiac care at Royal Columbian Hospital.
For every home team touchdown made during the playoffs, CP contributed $5,000 to Royal Columbian for a total of $90,000. Now, all eyes are on the 102nd Grey Cup game on November 30 in Vancouver where every touchdown scored by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Calgary Stampeders will generate an additional $10,000 for Royal Columbian, home to one of the busiest cardiac centres in Canada.
Foundation head recognized with top fundraising award
Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation President and CEO Jeff Norris is the recipient of the 2014 Giving Hearts Award for Outstanding Professional Fundraiser.
The honour, given by the Vancouver chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, celebrates an individual who supports philanthropy through their professional work as a seasoned fundraising professional. The award was presented during a National Philanthropy Day event on November 14th.

Poirier family story
It was a high-risk pregnancy, a premature birth and a stressful time for Aldergrove parents Eleanor and Dan Poirier, as their newborn girl Skyler arrived on October 30, 2013, at less than 26 weeks, weighing just 1.5 pounds.
While the expert team at Royal Columbian Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit quickly took over Skyler’s care, the hospital also helped the parents deal with another source of anxiety: finances.

Donation honours memory of emergency physician
The legacy of a Royal Columbian Hospital emergency physician will carry on, following a donation by friends of the doctor who passed away earlier this year.
Dr. Gilbert Dyck spent his career at Royal Columbian Hospital until he retired in 2010. He passed away at home on March 12, 2014, after a battle with multiple myeloma.
A gift to Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation from Steve and Karen McDonald will help purchase a chest compression system and a crash cart defibrillator for the hospital’s emergency department.

Marilyn Dowsett’s story
Gregory Dowsett wasn’t supposed to live as long as he did. Right from the start, he faced some complicated health problems, including being born with only three heart chambers instead of four. He survived his medical challenges into adulthood but passed away at the age of 25. His death devastated his mother, Marilyn.
