Cyril had an infectious smile. I can remember watching him go by our house with Christina on their daily walk, sometimes walking ahead of Christina like a take charge person. Condolences to Christina and the family. RIP, dear Cyril.

I have known Cyril for almost 50 years, from the time when he came to SFU as a graduate student, as a colleague, and as a friend who was willing to listen and to discuss day-to-day life. I will remember him fondly.

I had the honor and privilege to cross paths with Dr. Cyril Thong. He was my teacher (in first year Biology at SFU), my mentor (when it came to teaching first year students), and a great friend. The world lost a great teacher and person.

It is with much sadness to see Cyril leaving this world so soon. He and I were the first two graduate students of Dr. John Webster at Simon Fraser University. He is a great loss not only to his family, but also to his friends.

Cyril was Singapore's loss when he decided to stay in Canada after his doctorate. We met as adults. He was a very good and reliable friend; really kind and generous; such an avid reader. We will remember our outings and the meals shared.

Dad, you will be dearly missed. I'm glad that I got to visit you the day before you left. You asked if I was crying behind the face mask, I couldn't say anything. I hope you are now in a better place with no suffering. HUGS.

Cyril and I taught first year Biological Sciences together at Simon Fraser University for 35 years. When he won the SFU Excellence in Teaching award, many of his students wrote letters in support of his nomination. It meant a great deal to Cyril that several of the staff who cared for him at RCH were his former students.

When I was an undergrad student at SFU and was struggling Dr Thong took pity on me and made a special effort to help. I never properly thanked him. Today I'm an attending physician working on the frontlines of the pandemic. Thanks Dr Thong.

So sad to hear this. I studied under Cyril and later worked under him at SFU. We still met up when I visited Vancouver after I graduated and after his retirement. I had plan to visit him again this summer but it was disrupted by the pandemic.

In loving memory of Cyril Thong

It is with great sadness that the family of Cyril How Sik Thong announces his passing. Cyril had been battling pancreatic cancer since February 2020, and passed peacefully at Royal Columbian Hospital on Sunday, July 12, 2020 at the age of 73.

Cyril was a Senior Lecturer in the Biology department at Simon Fraser University for the majority of his life, touching the lives of tens of thousands of first year Biology students, some of whom became the wonderful doctors and nurses that took care of him in his last few months at Royal Columbian Hospital.

In his retirement, Cyril enjoyed travelling the world with his wife and his siblings.  He cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren and children.  Cyril loved puttering around in his garden and was a regular presence in the community.

Cyril will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 46 years Christina and his children Jennifer (Kevin) and Leonard (Tina). Cyril will also be fondly remembered by his 3 grandchildren, Alex, Kaiya, and Kaylee, and by his elder siblings, June, Tony, and Anne as well as his nieces and nephews in Singapore and Australia.

The family has chosen to forgo funeral services, and those who desire may make memorial donations in memory of Cyril to Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation.
