For Donna Turkington, Royal Columbian Hospital holds a deeply personal significance. As a former patient, devoted volunteer, and wife of a patient, her connection to the hospital has only strengthened over the years. It was during her husband’s final days at Royal Columbian in 2019 that her commitment to both the hospital and its future was solidified. “Volunteering has always been a part of my heart,” Donna says, recalling the many ways she’s given back to the community over the years. Yet it was a conversation with her husband, David, that spurred her to take her generosity one step further.

“Even before he became terminally ill, he always thought of others,” Donna shared. Inspired by her husband’s wish and the exceptional care provided by the hospital staff, particularly those on the 6 North unit, Donna made the decision to include Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation in both her Will and as a beneficiary of her life insurance policy. “It was one of his last requests, and it felt right to honour it,” she explains.

Legacy giving, for Donna, is more than just a donation—it’s a way to ensure that the hospital can continue to provide life-saving care for generations to come. Her passion for the community and desire to make a lasting impact are evident in the way she talks about her contributions. “Saving lives is number one,” she said simply. “The hospital can’t do it alone. The foundation has to be there to fill in the gaps.” Her gift, she hopes, will not only help the patients and staff but also inspire others to think about what they can leave behind. “Leaving a legacy gift doesn’t impact my current finances, but it leaves something meaningful behind,” Donna says. “It doesn’t take a lot—small amounts over time make a big difference.”

Her experiences as a volunteer have only deepened her connection to the hospital. Whether escorting patients or supporting the staff who once cared for David, Donna continues to find purpose in her work. One story that stands out for her is a nurse, affectionately nicknamed Giggles, who brought laughter to her husband’s bedside during those difficult months. “David loved her

sense of humour. They would tell jokes until his stomach hurt from laughing,” Donna recalls warmly. It’s those human moments—the care, the kindness—that make Royal Columbian feel like a second family to her.

As she reflects on her legacy, Donna hopes others will consider following in her footsteps. “Find something you’re passionate about, and just do it. It takes 10 minutes to make that decision, but the impact can last forever,” she advises. With her legacy gift, Donna is ensuring that the hospital will continue to thrive, helping others in the same way it helped her and her family.

For Donna, her gift is not just about giving back—it’s about paying forward the love and care she and David received during their most challenging days. In her own words: “It’s a way to leave a lasting legacy of love.”
