Dular Family

“People don’t often like to say hospitals are like home, but I get the feeling of home when I’m here.”

For Riha, Royal Columbian Hospital is more than just a place where she received lifesaving care. It’s a place that feels a bit like family — a feeling made even more powerful by her father’s generosity.

This Father’s Day, we celebrate the special bond between a father and a daughter — a bond that in Riha’s case meant the gift of life.

Riha was just 18 years old when she went into kidney failure. Shortly after her diagnosis, doctors told her parents it was time to start looking for a donor.

“I was ready to do it immediately.” says her father, Narendra. “I was a perfect match. It felt like a blessing.”

The transplant went smoothly just nine months later. “I really appreciate the love and sacrifice my father made, and the work my doctors and nurses put in.” Riha adds. “I’m just so grateful. Words can’t really express how much it means to me.”

“The hospital, the doctors, the nurses — they’re all amazing people.” says Narendra. “The care we received, and the lives they’re saving every day, it’s incredible.”

Inspired by their experience, the Dular family decided to give back. Narendra became a monthly donor and started a bottle drive, with all proceeds going directly to Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation. Riha feels the same. “With my dad being such a generous donor, it inspires me to be a part of a community like this. It’s a wonderful hospital to give back to.”

The family chose to direct their generosity toward the Renal Department and the Lab, the two areas that made the greatest difference in Riha’s care. “Some of them I’ve been seeing every two weeks for years. The lab has been there for me from the very beginning. It’s because of their testing that I was first diagnosed.”

Riha and Narendra visit the lab they supported — a department that played a key role in Riha’s journey.

Riha and her father are bound by more than love. They’re united by generosity — toward each other and toward Royal Columbian Hospital. It’s a tradition of kindness that will last for years to come.

This Father’s Day, we celebrate all the fathers who give, love, and sacrifice for their children — and for their communities.
