Generosity has the power to create a ripple effect that can last for generations. As evidence, look no further than a thoughtful philanthropic gift made decades ago that set the course for the growth of cardiac care at Royal Columbian Hospital. Over the past 50 years, heart services at the hospital have expanded to the point that Royal Columbian is now the busiest cardiac centre in BC, and it has become the busiest in Canada for a key, life-saving heart attack treatment.
Cabintoy family’s story
In the blink of an eye, the Cabintoy family’s early morning drive to church in Surrey took a horrific turn. Dashcam footage of the October 2018 head-on crash shows a car in the opposite lane suddenly swerved into their path, leaving no time to react. Royal Columbian Hospital – with one of the province’s two Level 1 trauma programs – would soon be called upon to respond to the extensive injuries suffered by the parents of two young girls.

Elijah John’s Story
Elijah John isn’t sure how he pulled himself out of the wreckage. The 18-year-old was in shock, he was struggling to breathe, and his left arm was dangling. All this, after his car hydroplaned off the highway on a rainy November evening as Elijah was going from work to his home in Hope. Thanks to a passerby, Elijah would eventually be rushed to Royal Columbian Hospital – one of the province’s two major adult trauma centres.
Michael Coss’s Story
Michael Coss has made it his mission to inspire. Twelve years ago, his future appeared bleak to many after the van he was driving rolled over on the Coquihalla Highway. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and remained in a coma for six months at Royal Columbian Hospital, the health region’s referral centre for brain and spine surgery. While the accident permanently changed his life, the 49-year-old sees lots of opportunity in his remarkable and ongoing recovery.

Ken Barrett’s Story
As a devoted fan and volunteer at Agassiz Speedway, 79-year old Ken Barrett has seen the occasional car crash over the years. But the worst wreck was away from the track, when a car t-boned his vehicle as Ken was crossing an intersection in Surrey. His traumatic injuries led to three surgeries in less than three weeks at Royal Columbian Hospital, including a fairly new procedure to fix severely broken ribs with titanium plates.
