Colin Lewis’s Story
It was a series of fortunate circumstances that helped save the life of Colin Lewis. The 73-year old White Rock man was in Abbotsford with family, on their way in a van to pick up the grandchildren from school, when his heart suddenly stopped. Thanks to the quick actions of a number of people in the crucial minutes after Colin suffered cardiac arrest, he was able to successfully undergo emergency quadruple bypass surgery at Royal Columbian Hospital.
Family & friends of triplets give back to Royal Columbian NICU
A Ladner family and their friends will purchase a life-saving piece of equipment for premature babies and other fragile newborns at Royal Columbian Hospital, five years after triplet girls received care in the hospital’s Variety Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
The Van Marrewyk family collected $55,000 in donations to help Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation buy a jet ventilator, in appreciation of the hospital’s neonatal staff after Ron and Stephanie Van Marrewyk’s daughters Andy, Paige and Shauna were born prematurely at 29 weeks in 2010. The girls spent two months in the neonatal intensive care unit.
RCH Foundation announces new Board of Directors for 2015/16
Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation is pleased to announce and congratulate the members of its volunteer Board of Directors for 2015/2016. This includes the appointment of Rana Vig as Director, in addition to Colin Galinski, who joined the Board of Directors in April.
The Foundation also offers its sincere appreciation to John Ashbridge, Helen Sparkes and Dr. Laurence Turner, whose nine-year terms on the board have reached their conclusion.
Gladys Robinson’s Story
85-year old Gladys Robinson had been fiercely independent, enjoying life in her small cabin by a lake north of Edmonton. She still shovelled her own walk, brought in firewood for her wood-burning Franklin stove and drove her car into town to get groceries. But as she visited her family in the Lower Mainland over the Christmas season, Gladys suddenly found herself in Royal Columbian Hospital with a stunning diagnosis: terminal lung cancer. In the days that followed, as all her loved ones visited and the hospital offered palliative care, one thought kept coming back to Gladys – “this is perfect.”
Sam Stewart’s Story
Jane Stewart was getting increasingly concerned. Her once-active 10-year old son Sam had developed a limp and was suffering from a sharp leg pain that was getting progressively worse as the months wore on. The pain hindered Sam’s ability to play soccer or even enjoy a good night’s sleep. It wasn’t until the family met a specialist at Royal Columbian Hospital that they finally found answers and an eventual solution.
Redevelopment of Royal Columbian Hospital set to begin
A new mental health and substance use facility, outpatient clinics and better care for seniors are part of the first phase of redevelopment of Royal Columbian Hospital.
Health Minister Terry Lake today announced business plan approval for phase one of the redevelopment, with a $249.8 million commitment from the Province and $9.1 million from the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation.
Royal Columbian Hospital’s smallest patients benefit from RBC donation
A $20,000 donation to Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation will help provide the right environment for premature babies to get stronger and healthier.
The gift from RBC Foundation will go towards the purchase of a Giraffe Omnibed incubator. This high-tech incubator provides an ideal, stable microenvironment to promote healthy growth in these vulnerable patients.
Hank Erickson’s Story
Hank Erickson was already very familiar with Royal Columbian Hospital in the fall of 2014, when he was rushed there by ambulance for what turned out to be a small vessel stroke. For two decades previously, he had walked its corridors daily, visiting staff and patients as the hospital’s chaplain. It was during that time he first encountered a patient who would eventually be considered one of the country’s greatest heroes of the 20th century: Terry Fox.
Leading marine contractor builds on tradition of giving to Royal Columbian
Fraser River Pile & Dredge has donated more than $85,000 in the last decade to support Royal Columbian Hospital.
Donation honours memory of non-profit member
The Group of Five and Friends Benevolent Society has donated $4,713.50 to Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation for a vital signs monitor, to be used in the operating room. The gift was made in memory of Shirley Piper, who passed away last year.
