Empowering Mental Health for New Parents

A Conversation with Dr. Kortney Witt,  Perinatal Psychiatrist at Royal Columbian Hospital

Navigating pregnancy and the postpartum period can be challenging, especially when it comes to mental health. Dr. Kortney Witt, a perinatal psychiatrist at Royal Columbian Hospital, is dedicated to supporting parents during this crucial time. In a recent interview, Dr. Witt shared insights into the mental health struggles new parents often face, how her team provides support, and the impact of Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation’s support.

Understanding Common Mental Health Challenges for New Parents

Dr. Witt explained that mental health challenges during pregnancy and up to a year postpartum can vary widely, with common issues including depression and anxiety disorders. “Major depressive disorder can show up as persistent sadness or hopelessness, making it tough to enjoy life or care for oneself and a baby,” she shared. Some parents may experience postpartum anxiety or even panic attacks, and those with pre-existing conditions, such as bipolar disorder, may be at increased risk for mood symptoms.

Less common, but even more serious, are psychotic disorders like schizophrenia, which also require careful monitoring during this period. Dr. Witt emphasized that recognizing these challenges early can lead to better outcomes for both parents and their children.

Supporting Families Through Comprehensive Care

The reproductive mental health care program at RCH plays an essential role in supporting families by educating them about mental health conditions, providing treatment options, and creating individualized care plans. “Our goal is to help people feel less alone,” Dr. Witt said. Her team focuses on empowering parents by discussing treatment options and supporting them in choosing the best approach for their unique situations.

A Collaborative Approach to Mental Health Care

Dr. Witt’s multidisciplinary team includes psychiatrists and registered clinical counselors who work together to deliver tailored care for each patient. The team provides a range of treatments, from individual counseling to group therapy and medication consultations, ensuring that each person receives comprehensive support in a caring environment. Group therapy sessions allow counselors and psychiatrists to collaborate, fostering a holistic approach to mental health care.

Personalized and Accessible Mental Health Treatment Options

The program offers various treatment groups that address specific concerns, such as managing anxiety, controlling anger, and navigating relationship challenges. For those considering medication, Dr. Witt and her team take into account factors like pregnancy and breastfeeding. “Our goal is to provide personalized care that meets each individual’s specific needs,” she explained, adding that they also support individuals facing pregnancy loss or mood changes linked to the menstrual cycle.

The hospital’s flexibility in offering both virtual and in-person appointments is another way they make mental health care more accessible. This flexibility allows new parents to choose the format that best fits their needs, helping them receive support despite the demands of caring for a newborn. “Having options reduces barriers to access,” Dr. Witt said, acknowledging the difficulties many new parents face in finding time and energy for self-care.

Guidance Through Grief and Pregnancy Loss

Dr. Witt also highlighted the importance of grief counselling for individuals and families who experience pregnancy loss. The hospital’s clinical counselors create a compassionate space for grieving parents, helping them realize they are not alone and guiding them through the healing process.

The Foundation’s Role in Mental Health Care

Dr. Witt recognizes the crucial role of the Foundation in supporting mental health services at RCH. “Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation was fundamental in fundraising for our new Mental Health and Substance Use Wellness Centre (MHSUWC). This building provides a platform for the members of the mental health team to collaborate with one another and provide a welcoming, safe environment for us to provide the care our patients require,” she said, expressing gratitude for the Foundation’s commitment to the mental health of parents and families in the community.

With the help of the dedicated team at Royal Columbian Hospital, parents navigating the joys and challenges of new parenthood can access the mental health support they need. Dr. Witt and her colleagues remain committed to providing compassionate, individualized care to make this journey a little easier.
