On November 17, 2023, Faizzal Fatehali’s life took a sudden and life-threatening turn. A dedicated family man and passionate advocate for community initiatives, Faizzal was attending a work event when he experienced a severe brain bleed. It started with numbness and an inability to stand, and as his condition rapidly worsened, the health professionals around him immediately recognized the gravity of the situation. An ambulance was called, and he was rushed to Royal Columbian Hospital (RCH), where the trauma team quickly took charge.
For Faizzal’s wife, Shaista, and their young daughters, the ordeal was both terrifying and surreal. But from the moment they arrived, staff and doctors at Royal Columbian stepped in not only with medical expertise but with a level of care and compassion that made all the difference.
“They were really quite welcoming, really friendly, and made us feel a little more comfortable,” Shaista says, reflecting on the early days in the hospital. The staff made sure the family was supported in every way possible, giving them the emotional space they needed to focus on Faizzal.
Throughout his time at RCH, the medical team was transparent and communicative, something Shaista deeply appreciated during such a trying time. “The majority of the medical staff were open, communicative, and optimistic. For a young family, this is very unexpected… all of the doctors were always answering my questions and wanted to make sure I knew what was going on,” she recalls. That level of support was vital as Faizzal underwent intensive treatment in the trauma unit.
Now, nearly a year later, Faizzal’s recovery has been nothing short of remarkable. Despite the initial uncertainty surrounding his condition, he has made significant strides. He is once again actively engaged with his family, has regained mobility, and continues to make progress every day. Shaista is grateful for the care her husband received at Royal Columbian and the impact it has had on their family.
Looking back on their journey, Shaista feels strongly about the importance of supporting Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation. “It comes back thousandfold. Being in it, you know how impactful it is. Experiencing it firsthand with a young family has made quite an impact.” For the Fatehali family, the support and generosity of others have played a vital role in Faizzal’s recovery, and they are now committed to giving back, knowing firsthand how much it matters.
